Terms of Use
The short version
- Retaz is a community of human curators. Every playlist on Retaz is made by a person, not a machine.
- Retaz hosts no music. Playback happens in your own streaming service, through links.
- You must be 18 or older.
- Your playlists stay yours. You give us permission to display and translate them within Retaz.
- One person, one account, honest votes. Manipulation gets removed.
- Membership is a subscription you buy in the app through the App Store or Google Play. It renews until you cancel it in your store account, and the store handles payment.
- Retaz is in Early Access until October 14, 2026, and opens to the public on October 17, 2026. Things will change, and sometimes break.
1. Agreement
These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Retaz LLC, a West Virginia limited liability company headquartered in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia, USA ("Retaz", "we", "us"). The Retaz Member Rights Charter, which we publish at retaz.fm/legal/member-rights-charter/ on October 1, 2026, is part of this agreement, alongside these terms. By creating an account or using the Retaz app or retaz.fm, you agree to these terms, to the Member Rights Charter and to our Privacy Policy. Where the Charter and these terms conflict, these terms apply, except that for La Chispa the La Chispa Founding Recognition Rules apply (Section 2). If you do not agree, do not use Retaz.
2. Early Access and membership
Retaz is in Early Access until October 14, 2026, and opens to the public on October 17, 2026. During Early Access, features may change, be added, or be withdrawn; the service may be interrupted or unavailable; and things may occasionally break. We will treat your account and content with care, but you use a pre-launch product with that understanding. All dates and times in these terms are US Eastern time, wherever you live.
What membership is. Until October 15, 2026, Early Access gives every account every feature, including casting hearts, without a membership, except the translation of direct messages, which needs a membership. From October 15, some of Retaz stays free, and other features, including casting hearts, need a membership. You can buy a membership as a subscription in the Retaz app, through the Apple App Store or Google Play, with your store account. You can also hold one without paying, through the Founders Program below. Today every membership you can buy is yearly, so its term is one year. The purchase screen shows its length, its price and what it includes.
Price. The app shows the price in your local currency before you buy, and your store confirms it before it charges you. Taxes are included or added as your store applies them where you live. When a first term is offered at a lower price, the purchase screen shows that price and the price your membership renews at. From October 15 through November 16, 2026, a first year bought in the app is offered at the La Chispa founding price. Your store decides who qualifies for a first-year price, usually a store account that has never held a Retaz membership. Your store also sets the exact hour its offer starts and ends where you live, so check the price on the purchase screen before you buy. A membership bought before October 15, 2026 costs the full price and starts the day you buy it. It does not move to the founding price later, and until October 15, Early Access already gives every account every feature.
Automatic renewal. Your membership renews automatically at the end of each term, and your store charges your store account the renewal price, until you cancel. To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before your term ends. If the renewal price changes, your store tells you before the renewal. Where its rules or the law require, it asks you to agree first.
Cancelling. You can cancel any time in your store account. On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. On Android, open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. On the web, use apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions or play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Your membership stays active until the end of the term you paid for, and nothing more is charged. Cancelling does not refund the term you already paid for. Deleting the app or your Retaz account does not cancel the subscription.
Refunds. Apple or Google handles every payment for a membership bought in the app, and you can ask for a refund. For a Google Play purchase, write to us at [email protected]: Retaz handles refunds of Google Play purchases itself, and a refund ends the membership it paid for. You can also ask Google Play under its own refund policy. For an App Store purchase, refunds are decided by Apple, and Retaz cannot issue them: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If Apple declines, you keep the year you paid for, and if you signed up before October 15, 2026, you are still a Founder. Nothing in these terms limits a refund right the law gives you.
A refunded membership. If a payment for a membership is refunded or reversed, we end the membership it paid for. The hearts you cast inside the term that payment covered are struck: they stop counting anywhere on Retaz, including La Chispa and the heart counts shown on playlists. Hearts you cast before October 15, 2026, or inside your free Founders period, are not struck by a refund. For La Chispa, the Rules say how a refund recorded after the campaign closes is treated.
Your account and your devices. Your membership belongs to the Retaz account you bought it with. Sign in to that account on any phone, iPhone or Android, and your membership is there. A store purchase can belong to only one Retaz account, and it cannot be moved to another. Billing stays with the store you bought from, and you manage or cancel it there. If your membership does not show after you sign in, tap Restore purchases on the Membership screen in the app, signed in to the store account you bought with.
Founders Program. Everyone who signs up for Retaz before October 15, 2026 is a Founder, whether or not they also bought a membership, and even if a purchase was later refunded. Anyone who signs up on or after October 15, 2026 is a regular member. The app shows your Founder status from the day you sign up, and Founder status stays with your account. As a Founder, your membership is free for 12 months from the day you signed up, for the first 50,000 Founders. It is all automatic: there is nothing to claim, no payment card is asked for, nothing is charged for it, and nothing is charged automatically when it ends. Your free membership is confirmed automatically on October 15, 2026, or later, once your account has accepted the Terms of Use and finished sign-up, at any time within the 12 months from the day you signed up. Your free period also grows automatically: by 12 months when you earn the Founding Curator badge, which the app awards for eleven qualifying actions from August 2 through November 16, 2026, and by 12 months for each friend who joins with your invite code and earns the badge by November 16, 2026, as the app describes. Ten such friends make your membership free for life. Before your free period ends, we will tell you what a membership costs after it.
La Chispa. La Chispa is Retaz's founding campaign, from October 17 through November 16, 2026. Taking part in it is also governed by the La Chispa Founding Recognition Rules, which we publish at retaz.fm/legal/la-chispa-rules/ on October 1, 2026. Where the Rules and these terms differ about the campaign, the Rules apply.
3. Who can use Retaz
You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or use Retaz, everywhere we operate, or older where the law of your country sets a higher minimum age for using a service like Retaz. You confirm your birth year at sign-up. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 18, we will close it. Earlier versions set this at 16 and gave members aged 16 and 17 additional protections by design; with the minimum at 18 there are no such members.
4. Your account
- You sign in with your Apple or Google account. You are responsible for keeping that sign-in secure.
- One person, one account. Do not create accounts for other people, share an account, or impersonate anyone.
- Give accurate information (display name, birth year, country). Do not misrepresent who you are.
- You pick a unique @handle at sign-up. Handles are subject to the same rule as display names: do not misrepresent who you are, and do not impersonate another person or brand with your handle.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account.
5. What Retaz is (and is not)
Retaz is a playlist curation community. Curators build playlists; listeners discover, vote, and share across 200+ languages. Retaz hosts no music and holds no audio. A Retaz playlist is a list of track references. When you play a track, playback happens inside your own music streaming service (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and others) through a link. Whether a track is available, and on what terms, depends on your streaming service, your subscription with it, and your region. Retaz does not control those services and is not responsible for their content, pricing, or availability.
Retaz also includes one-to-one direct messages between members. If you and another member follow each other when your conversation starts, your messages go straight to them. If you do not, your messages arrive as a message request, and it stays a request until the other member accepts it: they see who sent it and what it says, and can accept it, decline it (it leaves their requests and you are not told; it comes back if you write again), block you, or report it. Once a conversation is open (you followed each other when it started, or they accepted your request), you can both message each other in it whether or not either of you follows the other later, and either of you can end it by blocking the other. Limits apply, as the app shows, on how many messages a request can hold and on how many requests you can have waiting. A member can turn off new message requests in the app's privacy settings, and when either of two members has blocked the other, neither can message the other. From October 15, 2026, both members need a membership (Section 2) to send or receive direct messages. Everything in this section, and in Section 7 below, applies inside direct messages the same as it applies to playlists, profiles, and comments. See the Privacy Policy for how direct messages are handled.
6. Your content
You own what you make. Your playlists, titles, descriptions, comments, and bio remain yours. So that Retaz can work, you grant Retaz a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, display, translate, and promote your content within the Retaz service, including showing it to other members in their language. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies we are legally required to retain, completed within the timelines in the Privacy Policy.
Authorship. Every playlist on Retaz is made by a person, not a machine. When you publish a playlist, you affirm that you made it yourself. Publishing playlists that were machine-generated, copied from someone else, or published on another person's behalf violates these terms.
You are responsible for your content. Only publish what you have the right to publish.
7. Acceptable use
This applies everywhere on Retaz: playlists, profiles, comments, and direct messages. Do not post, and do not use Retaz to spread:
- child sexual abuse material of any kind (zero tolerance; reported to authorities as the law requires);
- anything illegal, or content that promotes illegal acts;
- threats, incitement, or glorification of violence;
- content promoting self-harm or suicide;
- hate directed at people for who they are;
- harassment or bullying;
- sexually explicit content;
- spam, scams, or deceptive practices;
- content that infringes copyright or other rights;
- impersonation of any person or entity;
- machine-generated music or fake artist content presented as human work.
Also prohibited: interfering with the service, scraping, automating account activity, probing our systems, or attempting to access other members' data.
8. Voting and leaderboard integrity
Votes on Retaz are the community's voice, so they have to be honest. Hearts are equal weight: one member, one vote per playlist, and no vote counts more than another. From October 15, 2026, casting a heart needs a membership, bought or held through the Founders Program (Section 2). Buying, selling, or trading votes, coordinating artificial vote rings, using multiple accounts, or using automation to vote or inflate rankings is prohibited. We may remove dishonest votes, correct affected rankings, and suspend or terminate accounts involved.
9. Moderation and enforcement
You can report playlists, profiles, comments, and direct messages from inside the app. Reports go to a restricted queue and a human reviews them. If content breaks these terms or our community guidelines, we may remove it, restrict its reach, or suspend or terminate the responsible account, with the response scaled to the harm. If you believe we got a decision wrong, email [email protected] with the subject "Appeal" within 30 days and a human will take a second look.
10. Copyright complaints
Retaz hosts no audio, but playlist text and imagery are member-created. If you believe content on Retaz infringes your copyright, email [email protected] with the subject "Copyright" and include: what work is infringed, where the material appears on Retaz, your contact information, a statement of good-faith belief, and a statement that your notice is accurate. We review notices and remove infringing material.
11. Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time, except from November 17, 2026 at 00:00 US Eastern Time (2026-11-17T05:00:00Z) until the final La Chispa tally has been captured, normally a few minutes later (La Chispa Rules, Section 1.6); see retaz.fm/delete-account. Deleting your account does not cancel a membership bought through the App Store or Google Play, so cancel it in your store account first (Section 2). We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, harm other members, or create legal risk for Retaz. If we close your account, cancel any membership in your store account, because the store keeps billing until you do. Where reasonable, we will tell you why. Sections that by their nature should survive (your license grant for retained copies, disclaimers, liability limits, governing law) survive termination.
12. Disclaimers
Retaz is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure. Content on Retaz is created by members, and Retaz does not endorse it.
13. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Retaz LLC and its members, officers, and agents are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of Retaz. Our total liability for all claims relating to the service is limited to the greater of 100 US dollars or what you paid for a Retaz membership in the 12 months before the claim, including through the App Store or Google Play. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; where the law gives you rights that cannot be limited, those rights are unaffected.
14. Governing law and venue
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of West Virginia, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts serving Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and you consent to their jurisdiction. If you are a consumer in a jurisdiction whose law entitles you to sue at home or to mandatory local consumer protections, nothing in this section takes that away.
15. App stores
If you got the app through the Apple App Store or Google Play, their terms also apply to your download and to any membership you buy there. On Apple, those are the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions and Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement. On Google, they are the Google Play Terms of Service. Apple and Google are not parties to these terms and are not responsible for the service, but they may enforce these terms as third-party beneficiaries where their agreements require.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Retaz grows. For material changes we will give you at least 30 days' notice in the app or by email before the new terms take effect. Continuing to use Retaz after the effective date means you accept the updated terms. If you do not accept them, cancel any membership in your store account (Section 2) and delete your account before the change takes effect.
